COON RAPIDS, MN – June 28, 2025 – The City of Coon Rapids is once again inviting its residents to participate in the annual Night to Unite event, scheduled for Tuesday, August 5, 2025. This highly anticipated evening aims to strengthen neighborhood bonds, promote crime prevention awareness, and foster stronger relationships between residents and local public safety personnel, including the Coon Rapids Police and Fire Departments.
Night to Unite, formerly known as National Night Out in some areas, is a statewide initiative held on the first Tuesday of August each year. It encourages communities to come together for informal gatherings, block parties, and various activities designed to build camaraderie and a sense of collective responsibility for neighborhood safety.
The Coon Rapids Police Department plays a central role in organizing and promoting the event, urging residents to host or join neighborhood parties. The primary goals of Night to Unite are to:
"Night to Unite is an incredible opportunity for neighbors to get to know each other, which is one of the most effective ways to prevent crime," said a representative from the Coon Rapids Police Department. "When residents know and trust one another, they are more likely to look out for each other and report suspicious activity."
Over 100 neighborhood parties typically register in Coon Rapids each year. Residents who register their parties with the Coon Rapids Police Department by the deadline (typically mid-July, though the exact date for 2025 should be confirmed on the city's website) can expect special visits from police officers and firefighters. Registered hosts also often receive a "swag bag" filled with goodies and crime prevention information, along with t-shirts for party organizers.
Parties can range from simple front-yard gatherings with lemonade to elaborate block parties with cookouts, games, and music. The key is simply for neighbors to connect and interact. These gatherings provide a unique, relaxed setting for residents to meet the public safety personnel who serve their community, ask questions, and build rapport.
Beyond the single evening, the benefits of Night to Unite are intended to extend throughout the year, fostering ongoing communication and cooperation that contributes to a safer and more vibrant Coon Rapids.
