Driver hospitalized after Friday morning collision near 119th Avenue crossing; Metro Transit, State Patrol leading investigation
COON RAPIDS, Minn. (Aug. 22, 2025) — Northstar Commuter Rail service was suspended Friday morning after a train struck a pickup truck at a crossing in Coon Rapids, sending the driver to the hospital and forcing temporary replacement bus service for riders.

Metro Transit officials said the incident occurred at approximately 7:12 a.m. at the crossing of 119th Avenue NW and Northdale Boulevard. A northbound train collided with a red pickup truck that was stopped on the tracks.
The driver was transported to a local hospital with serious injuries. Authorities have not released the driver’s identity or condition. No passengers or crew on the train were reported injured.
The crossing is equipped with gates, flashing lights, and bells. Investigators have not yet determined why the vehicle was on the tracks.
The crash halted rail service in both directions between Target Field in Minneapolis and Big Lake. Metro Transit provided replacement bus service to transport passengers to their destinations. Some riders reported delays of up to two hours.
Metro Transit Police and the Minnesota State Patrol are leading the investigation, with assistance from the Coon Rapids Police Department and the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office. Crews remained at the scene through the morning to secure the crossing and examine evidence.
The Northstar Line, operating since 2009, connects downtown Minneapolis with the northwestern suburbs and Big Lake. Earlier this month, state officials announced plans to discontinue rail service by January 2026 and transition to full bus operations, citing high costs and reduced ridership.
The investigation into Friday’s collision remains ongoing.
