ST. PAUL, MN — Barely a day after Senator Ann Rest announced she will retire and not seek reelection, Minnesota State Representative Mike Freiberg, a Democrat-Farmer-Labor (DFL) from Golden Valley, declared his candidacy for State Senate District 43 on September 17, 2025.
Senate District 43 encompasses the cities of Golden Valley, New Hope, Robbinsdale, Crystal, and a portion of Plymouth. Freiberg currently represents House District 43B, while Cedrick Frazier (DFL-43A) represents the neighboring House district.
Freiberg, a public health attorney and adjunct professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law, was first elected to the Minnesota House of Representatives in 2012. Before his legislative service, he served on the Golden Valley City Council. During his tenure in the House, Freiberg has chaired the Elections Committee and championed key legislation including automatic voter registration, pre-registration for 16- and 17-year-olds, restoring voting rights for individuals on probation, the Minnesota Voting Rights Act, and the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact.
Senator Rest, who has represented District 43 in the Senate since 2000, previously served in the Minnesota House from 1984 to 2000. She is recognized for her historic leadership on the Taxes Committee, having chaired it in both the House and Senate—the first and only person in Minnesota history to do so. Rest is widely respected for her steady leadership and commitment to her community.
In his announcement, Freiberg expressed gratitude to Senator Rest for her decades of public service and emphasized his desire to continue her legacy of community-focused leadership. His candidacy marks the first major step toward filling the open Senate seat in a district that has long been a DFL stronghold.
