Coon Rapids Costco Store to Relocate and Expand Fuel Station

Coon Rapids, MN – Costco Wholesale is set to relocate and expand its fuel facility at the Coon Rapids store following approval from the Coon Rapids City Council. The project, approved through a Planned Unit Development (PUD), will double the number of gas pumps and reconfigure traffic flow in response to longstanding congestion concerns.

The current fuel station, located on the northeast corner of Costco’s property, operates with 10 pumps. At peak times, the demand frequently results in long lines of vehicles spilling onto Northdale Boulevard, creating traffic backups and safety concerns.

Under the approved plan, Costco will move the fuel facility to the southwest corner of the property, on land currently occupied by a vacant TGI Fridays. The site will be demolished to make way for the redesigned station, which will expand capacity to 20 pumps—allowing the retailer to serve roughly twice as many members at once.

City officials emphasized that the relocation is intended not only to meet higher customer demand but also to improve traffic circulation within the busy Riverdale shopping area. The new design includes updated driveway access and circulation changes aimed at reducing queuing and easing congestion near adjacent intersections.

“The new layout is expected to improve safety, lessen the impact on Northdale Boulevard, and enhance convenience for Costco members,” city planning staff noted in their review.

While an exact construction timeline has not yet been announced, Costco is expected to keep its current fueling operation open until the new station is ready for service. The company must also meet environmental, safety, and traffic management conditions outlined in the City Council’s approval before moving forward.

The expansion reflects Costco’s broader strategy to enhance customer experience by addressing traffic challenges at high-volume fueling sites while providing additional convenience for its members.
