ANOKA COUNTY, MN — Members of the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) publicly demonstrated their commitment to raising awareness about domestic and sexual violence on Thursday by participating in “Purple Thursday.”
Officers wore purple—the color associated with domestic violence awareness—to show support for survivors and victims of domestic and sexual abuse.
Purple Thursday is observed nationally each October during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The day encourages communities to honor survivors, raise awareness, and highlight available resources. The color purple symbolizes peace, courage, survival, honor, and a shared dedication to ending violence.
In addition to wearing purple, the ACSO highlighted critical local resources, specifically Alexandra House, the only domestic and sexual violence program in Anoka County. Alexandra House provides a wide range of free and confidential services, including a 24-hour emergency shelter, legal advocacy, support groups, and a 24-hour helpline. The organization also leads initiatives like the “Purple Lights” campaign, encouraging residents and public agencies to display purple lights throughout October as a visible symbol of support for victims and survivors.
The ACSO emphasized that individuals experiencing domestic violence should seek help immediately. In case of emergencies, residents are urged to call 911 or the ACSO directly. For non-emergency support, Alexandra House can be reached at 763-780-2330 or toll-free at 888-780-2332.
The Anoka County Board has officially proclaimed October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Sheriff’s Office’s participation in Purple Thursday aligns with these countywide efforts to ensure victims and survivors know support is available and that the community stands united against domestic and sexual violence.
