MANKATO, Minn. (KEYC) - The Minnesota Department of Transportation announced today that eight Minnesota cities are set to receive Active Transportation Planning Assistance grants to help increase the number of people walking and biking to destinations in their communities.
“Whether a community wants to reduce pollution, curb traffic, revitalize its Main Street, or increase residents’ health and safety, MnDOT’s Active Transportation Planning Assistance program brings together neighbors to dream big and develop a work plan for building their own network for walking and bicycling,” said Will Wlizlo, Active Transportation coordinator.

One of the eight recipients is St. Peter, where the grant will be used for a community-wide Active Transportation plan within the city. The other seven recipients are Minneapolis, Rochester, St. Paul, Coon Rapids, Roseville, Alexandria and Cannon Falls.
Funded by the Minnesota Legislature, the grants cover the estimated $100,000 cost of technical assistance from a consultant, such as developing an action plan and demonstration project. The cities will not receive money directly from MnDOT. Each community is responsible for implementation costs (e.g., for construction) of their action plan.
