Coon Rapids Father Receives Rare Triple Organ Transplant At Mayo Clinic
Mike Loven underwent a heart, lung and kidney transplant earlier this month.
The family of a Coon Rapids man who underwent a rare triple organ transplant is asking for the community’s support as he recovers.
Mike Loven underwent a heart, lung and kidney transplant at the Mayo Clinic earlier this month. He had been on the waitlist for a transplant for nine months.
Loven’s family recently created a GoFundMe to help cover medical expenses, household bills and other costs as he recovers. After being discharged from the hospital, Loven will stay at a Rochester recovery facility for a few months.
Loven’s triple organ transplant is one of around 50 that have been performed by the Mayo Clinic at its campuses in Minnesota, Arizona and Florida since 1989.
The heart and lung transplants were performed in one surgery, while the kidney transplant was performed the next day.
“My dad has always connected with me in a way no one else can. When I’m having a bad day, he always knows what to say to calm me down. The days of his transplants, the whole world felt quieter. It was the weirdest feeling," Loven’s 16-year-old daughter Emily wrote in the fundraiser.
“I am extremely happy his surgeries were successful, and that I still have my dad today."
The Mayo Clinic says that selection for a triple transplant is a complex process, and eligible patients tend to be children and young adults.
"Triple transplant's complexity calls for robust clinical status," says Dr. Bashar A. Aqel, M.D. in 2023. "Selection is crucial, especially as recovery is challenging. You almost need a perfect patient."
