Former DFL Staffer Ian Oundo Launches Bid For Minnesota Senate Seat In District 35

Coon Rapids businessman and former party organizer challenges Republican Sen. Jim Abeler in closely watched suburban district

Ian Oundo, a former staffer for the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) and local entrepreneur, has officially announced his candidacy for the Minnesota Senate District 35 seat, which includes Coon Rapids and Anoka.

Ian Oundo

Oundo, who previously served as the DFL’s civic engagement director in 2019, says his campaign will focus on easing cost-of-living burdens, strengthening small businesses, and advancing policies that support working families. In his launch statement, Oundo emphasized a “community-centered and business approach” to state government, pointing to rising grocery bills and household expenses as top concerns for residents.

Sen. Jim Abeler

He will face incumbent Sen. Jim Abeler, a Republican who has represented District 35 since 2016 and previously served more than a decade in the Minnesota House. Abeler is seeking re-election in a district that has grown increasingly competitive in recent years.

The race is expected to draw significant attention as both parties vie for control of the Minnesota Senate, where narrow margins mean suburban swing districts like District 35 could tip the balance of power. The district is majority white, with a mix of middle-income households and growing racial diversity, making it a bellwether for statewide trends.

Oundo’s candidacy brings together political organizing experience and private-sector credentials. He says his dual background gives him a unique perspective on addressing community needs while promoting local economic growth.

The 2026 general election will determine whether District 35 continues its Republican representation under Abeler or shifts toward Oundo’s DFL-backed vision. With control of the Senate at stake, the contest is expected to be hard-fought and closely watched across Minnesota.
