FRIDLEY, Minn. A predawn fire at The Estates at Fridley, a skilled nursing and long term care facility on the 5700 block of East River Road, led to a partial evacuation, one hospitalization, and the arrest of a resident suspected of setting the blaze. The incident occurred at approximately 5 a.m. on Monday, December 8, and drew a wide emergency response from fire and law enforcement agencies across Anoka County.

Fire Contained to Single Room, Residents Evacuated for Safety

Fridley Public Safety reported that responding officers and firefighters encountered heavy smoke coming from a resident’s room upon arrival. Crews quickly contained the fire and confirmed that flames had not extended beyond the room of origin.

Because of the smoke conditions and the cold morning temperatures, a partial evacuation was initiated to ensure the safety and comfort of residents. Individuals displaced from the affected area were sheltered temporarily on a Metro Transit bus until it was safe for them to return indoors. Engines from Andover and Columbia Heights assisted Fridley firefighters with suppression and ventilation operations.

Resident Arrested on Suspicion of Starting the Fire

During the investigation at the scene, officers identified a male resident as a potential suspect in the ignition of the fire. His whereabouts were initially unknown, prompting law enforcement to establish a perimeter around the area. The search effort was supported by police departments from Columbia Heights, Coon Rapids, Spring Lake Park, and Blaine, along with the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office.

The suspect was located nearby a short time later and taken into custody. Formal charges are pending as investigators continue to examine evidence and determine motive and cause.

One Resident Hospitalized with Non Life Threatening Injuries

Another resident was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment of injuries described as non life threatening. No additional injuries to staff or first responders were reported.

Multi Agency Investigation Underway

The cause of the fire remains under active investigation by the Anoka County Fire Investigation Team, the Minnesota State Fire Marshal Division, the Anoka County Sheriff’s Office, and the Fridley Police Division. This type of coordinated investigative approach is standard in cases involving potential arson within licensed care facilities, where residents may be vulnerable and building systems must be closely evaluated.

Authorities note that the investigation is ongoing and that no further details are being released at this time.
