MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 10, 2026).
Mosques and community leaders across Minnesota are paying increased attention to security following remarks by President Donald Trump about Somali Minnesotans that drew criticism from religious leaders and elected officials.
MPR News reported Friday that mosque leaders were considering or implementing additional safety measures after the president urged non-Somali Minnesotans to “fight back” against the Somali community in a social media post.
The remarks have raised concerns among some religious and community leaders about the potential for hostility toward Somali residents and Muslim institutions.
Minnesota is home to a substantial Somali American community whose members participate in the state's businesses, schools, health care institutions, religious organizations and civic life.
Mosques serve not only as places of worship but also as community centers where families gather, young people participate in educational programs and residents seek support.
Concerns about security at these institutions therefore extend beyond individual congregations to the broader question of whether community members can gather and practice their faith without fear.
The president's remarks followed national attention to an alleged terrorism-related plot, but responsibility for criminal conduct belongs to the individuals involved and should not be attributed to an entire ethnic or religious community.
Community leaders and elected officials who criticized the president's comments have emphasized the importance of protecting residents and preventing threats or intimidation.
The reported security responses do not establish that every mosque has received a specific threat. They reflect precautionary measures and concerns described by community and religious leaders.
The situation places renewed attention on the responsibilities of public officials, law enforcement agencies and community organizations to respond to credible threats while protecting constitutional rights and public safety.
MinneapoliMedia will continue monitoring developments affecting Minnesota's Somali and Muslim communities, including any documented security incidents, official responses and efforts to strengthen community protection.
