Coon Rapids Urges Residents to ‘Fall Back’ and Test Smoke Alarms as Daylight Saving Time Ends
COON RAPIDS, Minn. — November 2, 2025
As Daylight Saving Time (DST) ends this weekend, the City of Coon Rapids is reminding residents to set their clocks back one hour and take a critical step in home safety: testing their smoke alarms.
The annual transition from DST to Standard Time officially occurs at 2:00 a.m. local time on Sunday, November 2. Residents are encouraged to “fall back” by adjusting their clocks before going to bed on Saturday night, November 1.
Smoke Alarms: A Life-Saving Reminder
Local officials emphasized that the clock change offers a convenient reminder to check smoke alarms, aligning with guidance from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). According to the NFPA, nearly three out of five home fire deaths happen in residences without functioning smoke alarms. Regular testing and timely maintenance are essential to keeping families safe.
The NFPA recommends the following verifiable smoke alarm maintenance tips:
- 10-Year Battery Alarms: Smoke alarms with non-replaceable 10-year batteries are designed to last a decade. If the unit chirps to signal a low battery, replace the entire alarm immediately.
- Standard Battery Alarms: Alarms with replaceable batteries should have the batteries changed at least once a year, or immediately if a low battery warning chirps.
- Battery Replacement Guidance: Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use recommended battery types listed on the alarm or in the instruction manual.
Coon Rapids officials note that taking a few minutes during the DST clock change to test smoke alarms can prevent tragedies and ensure a safe home environment.
