According to city materials, the initiative is organized around weekly themes intended to guide residents through practical sustainability strategies, including urban forestry, home electrification, waste reduction, and conservation. The programming is supported through workshops, city-hosted events, and ongoing services at the Coon Rapids Recycling Center. (City of Coon Rapids)

The Earth Month campaign is divided into four distinct themes:
Week 1: Urban Forestry and Tree Canopy
The city launched the month with a focus on expanding and maintaining the urban tree canopy. Programming included an Arbor Day Tree and Plant Sale, offering Minnesota-compatible tree and plant species for purchase through mid-April, with distribution scheduled for May.
Week 2: Home Electrification
On April 14, the city hosted a public workshop titled “Basics of Electrifying Your Home” at the Coon Rapids Civic Center. The session provided residents with information on transitioning from fossil fuel-based systems to electric alternatives, including heat pumps and induction stoves, as well as guidance on available federal and local incentives.
Week 3: Waste Reduction Through Swap Meets
The third week of programming centers on reuse as a waste reduction strategy, with the Sustainability Commission promoting community swap events and alternatives to purchasing new goods.
City officials are encouraging residents to exchange gently used items, including clothing, household goods, and tools, through organized swap meets and local reuse networks such as “Buy Nothing” groups and thrift stores.
Coon Rapids operates a structured, token-based swap system through its Recycling Center, located at 1827 111th Avenue NW. Residents can bring eligible items during designated drop-off periods and receive tokens, which can later be redeemed for other items at scheduled swap events.
The city has outlined the following upcoming events:
Additional swap events scheduled for 2026 include:
City materials indicate limits may be placed on item selection during events to ensure equitable distribution among participants.
The final week of Earth Month programming will focus on pollinator support and water conservation. Planned outreach includes guidance on native plantings, pollinator-friendly landscaping, and the use of rain barrels to manage stormwater and protect local water resources.
Beyond April, the City of Coon Rapids maintains several permanent sustainability programs through its Recycling Center:
City officials state that the Earth Month campaign is designed to connect residents with these ongoing services while promoting incremental behavior changes that reduce waste and energy use.
