The annual program is designed to support water conservation, reduce organic waste, and limit stormwater runoff into local waterways. City officials confirmed that all products in the program are manufactured from 100 percent recycled materials and are offered at reduced rates compared to standard retail pricing.
Through the program, residents can purchase rain barrels and compost bins at subsidized prices through an online preorder system.
Rain barrels are priced at approximately $100 through the program, compared to typical retail prices exceeding $120. Each unit has a 45-gallon capacity and includes a debris screen, garden hose, shut-off valve, and overflow hose.
Compost bins are priced at approximately $80, below typical retail costs of more than $100. The bins offer a capacity of about 125 gallons, or 17 cubic feet, and include a lockable lid and sliding access doors designed for ease of use.
Residents of Coon Rapids, along with those within the Coon Creek Watershed District, are eligible for an additional $20 discount on rain barrel purchases.
The discount is applied at checkout using the code CCWD2026, reducing the final cost of a rain barrel to approximately $80 before tax. Program materials indicate the discount is generally limited to one unit per household and applies to a limited number of purchases.
Participation in the program requires advance online ordering through the Recycling Association of Minnesota. Products are distributed through scheduled regional pickup events rather than retail locations.
For Coon Rapids residents, the designated pickup is scheduled for Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Anoka County Highway Department.
Organizers note that items must be collected during the assigned pickup window. Shipping and alternate pickup arrangements are not available for discounted orders. Residents are advised to bring appropriately sized vehicles, as the equipment can be bulky.
The program targets two primary environmental outcomes: reducing stormwater runoff and diverting organic waste from landfills.
Rain barrels allow households to capture and reuse rainfall for irrigation, reducing pressure on municipal stormwater systems and helping protect water quality in nearby lakes and rivers. Compost bins provide a means to process food scraps and yard waste at home, decreasing landfill volume and supporting soil health.
City officials have linked the initiative to broader sustainability efforts, including ongoing Earth Month programming and year-round recycling services.

The 2026 sale is part of a coordinated statewide effort involving municipalities, watershed districts, and environmental organizations aimed at expanding access to household-level conservation tools.
